Northern New Jersey Home Schoolers Support Network
Hi! Welcome to this page. I'm glad you're interested in finding out about the NJHSN. Scroll down to find out more. Before you leave, please sign the guestbook to let me know what you think about the group, our goals, or even just the way the page is set up.
This page and the group are set up by me, Nathalie White, a homeschooling teen in Hackettstown, NJ.

I was born in California and lived there until I was 10, when we were transferred to New Jersey. In CA we had the most wonderful support network! It was called CHEP. It was set up BY the public school system. They provided teachers who helped out with subjects that gave you trouble, they administered academic testing such as CTBS and HSPT tests, there were all sorts of extracurricular clubs, field trips... I could go on and on.

Over the years I was involved with the drama club, the ecology club, the computer club, the chess club, and the creative writing club. I am still friends with some of the people I met in that group, and some of my fondest childhood memories are of CHEP activities.

Well we had a rude awakening when we came to New Jersey. Our first year here we asked the superintendant of our school district whether we could sign up for CTBS testing. We were told, (quote) "You're in or you're out. You chose to homeschool. We are not obligated to provide any services for you. But if you choose to send your children to public school, we'll be happy to help you with anything you want."

Since then we've been completely on our own. Northern NJ has a fairly large homeschooling population, but the problem is that there is really no central network that holds us all together.
